Martin West Memorial Lecture, 2 March 2017, University of Oxford

Balliol College and the Faculty of Classics at the University of Oxford are proud to announce the inaugural Martin West Memorial Lecture, to be held in the Ioannou Centre for Classical and Byzantine Studies (4 St Giles, Oxford OX1 3LU), at 5.00 pm on Thursday, the 2nd of March, 2017.

In honour of one of the college’s and faculty’s most distinguished alumni, Martin Litchfield West (23rd September 1937-13 July 2015), these lectures will focus on ancient Greek music and poetry, two of the many fields in classical scholarship to which Professor West made an extraordinary contribution. We are delighted that Professor Andrew Barker of the University of Birmingham will deliver the inaugural, entitled ‘Migrating musical myths: the case of Euripides and the Libyan lotos’.

The lecture will commence at 5 pm, and be followed by a drinks reception in the Ioannou Centre. Those who wish to dine afterwards in Balliol with the speaker (at a cost of £45) should notify Adrian Kelly (adrian.kelly@balliol.ox.ac.uk) as soon as possible.
